Why Genotype Compatibility Matters in Marriage

In Nigerian relationships, discussing genotype isn't just health advice — it's a deeply responsible act of love and future planning.

Bringing up genotype doesn't need to feel clinical or awkward. Doing it early ensures that both partners are on the same page about their future goals and family planning.

True compatibility includes caring for the generations to come.

Navigating the Genotype Conversation Early in Dating

To help you navigate this, here is a quick guide on genotype compatibility based on medically established combinations:

• AA + AA = Excellent compatibility (No risk of sickle cell disease in children).

• AA + AS = Compatible (Low risk, though some children may inherit the sickle cell trait).

• AA + SS = Compatible (Children will inherit the sickle cell trait, but will not have the disease).

• AS + AS = High Risk (Not recommended, 25% chance of children inheriting sickle cell disease).

• AS + SS = Very High Risk (Not recommended, 50% chance of children inheriting sickle cell disease).

• SS + SS = Extremely High Risk (Not recommended, all children will inherit sickle cell disease).

Understanding these combinations early on is key to making informed, loving decisions for your future family.
